Time for reflection isn’t something that we prioritize.
When I was a people-leader, I always wanted to build reflection time into my schedule, and I don’t think I ever succeeded. Even if I booked it in my calendar, it didn’t take priority over the many other things that seemed urgent.
Nowadays, I’m able to make time for reflection and thinking. In fact, I find that I’m less productive without it. Sometimes creating a program or preparing for a coaching conversation can only be done away from the computer. A walk is an amazing time to let your mind ponder things.
What value does reflection time bring?
-
An opportunity for process time to create meaning and learn things from events and ideas.
-
Increased self-awareness to see how your actions impact other people.
-
More clarity and better decision-making.
-
Improved relationships by giving time to think about interactions, past and future.
I wanted to offer another mini-retreat this spring, and I realized that “Reflection” would be a great theme. With that in mind, I’m opening registration for a one-day retreat in Calgary on April 25. We’ll spend the time reconnecting with ourselves, reflecting, and maybe even finding ways to build more reflection time into our lives. Richelle Kozdial is joining me once again to lead a creative activity.
In the meantime, I invite you to find ways to bring reflection time into your life at work and at home. It could be as simple as a bedtime journal ritual or as elaborate as a monthly review session. At work, find a corner in your calendar and spend time just thinking about your work. Even 20 minutes will make a difference.
